The front fresnel of the speedlite does a great job focusing the light and you can have a wide or narrow bean playing with the zoom setting (idea for a post!). I find the dish reflector quite useful for this purpose, and even more with the honeycomb. Just get rid of the internal deflector. I also have one home-made black straw honeycomb, but it's light beam is very narrow. Good for macro, not good for people. For a small diffused light source, I like to work with the Ezybox Hotshoe.
