Hi Steven,
More than 'focus', with speedlite what you need are means to flag the light, or prevent it from going where you don't want it. The front fresnel of the speedlite does a great job focusing the light and you can have a wide or narrow bean playing with the zoom setting (idea for a post!). I find the dish reflector quite useful for this purpose, and even more with the honeycomb. Just get rid of the internal deflector.
I also have one home-made black straw honeycomb, but it's light beam is very narrow. Good for macro, not good for people.
For a small diffused light source, I like to work with the Ezybox Hotshoe. Small and with good light quality. I need to put a post online with a review on that one...

That's a lot of light loss, thanks for the research. I noticed in your earlier article you used it mainly to focus the light...given the light loss shown, do you think there might be more efficient ways of focusing the beam than this dish? Also, I noticed than many of the new wave of cheap beauty dishes seem to have the concave side of the deflector facing the flash, if I understand you correctly, you say the convex side bounces more light back to the dish?

Or what database? You can get order of magnitude improvements via the bulk loader API over SQL inserts, provided you can live with the constraints of the bulk loader on the table (some DBs won't query during the bulk operation, getting a table read lock). I've move about 2TB/hour from one system to another using a simple program and bulk load APIs.

Nice gerard!
What seems to be simple light for you, is quite complicated for me.
Fortunately I can enjoy the result anyway.

Maybe upload it to 500px.com
